We’ve discussed the first two steps in the Scripture Union Bible Reading Method (Pray and Read) so now it’s time to get to #3: Reflect. As you can imagine, reflecting or meditating on the passage is a key part of the process!
As you reflect on what you’ve just read, ask yourself these questions: What does this passage say? What is its main point? What does it tell me about God or about me? What does it require of me now, in thought, word or action? These questions will help you “dig deeper” into the meaning of the passage as you study and reflect on it. You might also find it helpful to write your answers in a journal or notebook.
Sometimes, you may want to see what other Christians who have studied that passage think about it. If so, you can use a Bible Commentary. And you can also read the comments in Scripture Union’s Bible Reading Guides, Discovery and Encounter with God. They’ll allow you to share the thoughts of Christians from all around the world. But whatever you do, don’t neglect to reflect! That’s one important way God will speak to you from his Word.
